#FlashFiveFriday Backbone

Grow a backbone. That’s what most people say if you show the slightest weakness. Is your backbone that strong? I heard about a guy once that lifted weights so much that he crushed his back. The only thing the docs could do was remove the shattered bone pieces and leave his muscle mass (he was a body builder) to keep everything in place IF he stopped body building. A backbone is a fragile thing really. I popped one disk in my neck and lost my left side. Had surgery and got it back. Did too many push ups or something and lost it again. The fake disc that I have will no longer work in 20 years or so. See it will be in perfect condition and the rest of my natural backbone won’t. Take care of that backbone. It’s the only one you’ve got!

  1. Such an interesting idea about the backbone being symbolic of strength, as you say. It’s so easy to damage that many of us take it for granted.

My father had an accident down the coal mines in the early nineties and was nearly paralysed. He was fortunate in the end but suffers chronic back pain to this day.

    • Work accident happened to my mom. I was the same age as when it happened to her. Weird! I now kinda know what she’s gone through all these years!

  2. Wow! The poor body builder guy. Hope your back feels good and strong now. My dad has a degenerative spine condition, which is really sad because I can see how gradually he has less power and movement, but he still insists on doing things, trying to keep independent. It’s strange how our bodies are simultaneously so strong and so weak. But it’s amazing what medicine can do nowadays in replacing parts. I imagine in 100 years, they’ll be many bionic people! :)

  3. Hi! Body building is abusive to your body; body toning is not. Strength training with healthy regard to your body and how it works is ideal. Yoga uses your own body mass to strengthen, tone, lengthen and heal itself. I highly recommend a personal regimen of yoga for you and your back :) Take it easy in the beginning – Everyone has their own learning curve. :) Namaste!!!
