#FlshFiveFriday Giving

I don’t want stuff anymore. I’m sick of stuff. The holidays are coming up and I know people are gearing up for the ‘Season of Giving‘ but I hate it. I don’t even need birthday cards or any kind of card. Except from my Grandma because she’s always been a card sender for every occasion, even my wedding anniversary.

How about giving all those intangibles that matter – praise, thanks, acknowledgement, love, caring, affection. That’s what I crave now. Not another knick-knack or gadget. And this also makes it easy for you to gift me something this year! :-) No postage and handling.

  1. Last year we skipped Christmas cards and kept gift giving to a low key affair. I’ve always loved giving presents so it felt hard – even stingy – to pull back but actually in the end we just put more thought into the smaller, more personal gifts. And no queuing at the post office with 50 cards to mail!

  2. I totally relate to your post! Over the years we’ve taken care to shed stuff we don’t need. In 2009 when we finally settled into our 102 year old home in Portland we were glad of being free of superfluous stuff. We like our space and the liberation that comes from being stuffless. Now we take great care not to accumulate anything. People that know us are careful not to gift us with material items.

We have each other, our family, friends, and four legged pets. They will always be enough.

  3. I’m not sure my kids or grand kids would allow me to get on board this train, but I do like the way we encourage gifts that are homemade. This usually means time went into it instead of just money.
