Read-along for Firefly by Piers Anthony

Kriss over at the CabinGoddess has been discussing Firefly with me, a novel of ecstatic terror. LOL I’ve been reading it as esoteric because of the tiny book cover I have on my Kindle Fire.

So where are we. Halfway through! I’ve gone from 25% to 50% since last week and the story has definitely picked up. Here are my discussion questions for those reading along or who have already read this book:

1. You knew May Flowers’ charming hubby was going to come back into the picture. How was the this the catalyst for several events in the story?

2.  Who is Mid? What are your best guesses right now?

3. Who’s your favorite character so far? Has it changed from the beginning?

4. Why was the story Jade told Mid significant?

5. Does Jade’s stories help you understand her character? Why or why not?

  1. 1. You knew May Flowers’ charming hubby was going to come back into the picture. How was the this the catalyst for several events in the story?

It changes everything, well turns it in directions perhaps adjusting projections of each character. It changed the roll of Jade, making her a caretaker instead of one who needs caring. It changed how the sheriff thought of her and ended up pushing the story to go in another direction. It addresses a common form of abuse as well as addressing AIDS which in 1990 this was necessary because of all the misconceptions.

    2. Who is Mid? What are your best guesses right now?

A philanthropist of some sort. He is one big zoo keeper. Middle Kingdom is a zoo that keeps things out and allows those within to be who they are. He also collects exotic “animals” his employees. Each have issues, are broken but yet he allows them to blossom into who they could be despite their oddities.

    3. Who’s your favorite character so far? Has it changed from the beginning?

I still love Jade even though she is COMPLETELY INSANE! I am liking her more and more. She is the voice of Piers need to balance the world of fantasy with reality. Just as Xanth borders the mundane from itselef. Middle Kingdom is like another Xanth in the real world, less fantasy and more of a realistic horror of REALITY!

    4. Why was the story Jade told Mid significant?

Because it solidified her worth with him. It also allowed him to see May as more than just an employee. It put a human perspective on each of them, including the use of Mid as the tycoon. He saw how she viewed him as a person, and how he should realize he was vulnerable like all of them. His cage is just different than May’s, Geode, and herself.

    5. Does Jade’s stories help you understand her character? Why or why not?

Yes, it shows how she has taken the world of fantasy and managed to adapt to her own reality in order to survive and cope. It also allows for Piers strength in story telling to shine through and allow his readers to be more at ease with this particular story.
